Biography
About Dr. Roll
I was born in Baltimore Maryland. My parents decided to relocate to the Midwest so I decided to move with them. I grew up in Kansas City Missouri and then attended Harding University in Search Arkansas where I completed my B.S. degree in chemistry. I completed my Masters degree and PhD degree in biochemistry at the University of Illinois Urbana. I studied the structures of complex carbohydrates on the plasma membrane and inside the cells of chick fibroblasts infected with Rous Sarcoma virus. Graduate studies provided another bonus. While working in the laboratory I met my future wife Peggy and we had the right chemistry. With five children and two grandchildren we are still happily married. We moved to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine where I studied the disease of alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. I started teaching in the chemistry department at Roberts Wesleyan College after completing my postdoctoral work. I am interested in the synthesis and regulation of topoisomerase enzymes, particularly in Chlamydia bacteria, and the efficient purification of alpha-1-antitrypsin from human serum and calf serum. In addition I am pursuing research projects in forensic science involving DNA identity testing. I have also completed Sabbatical research projects at the Baylor College of Medicine, the University of Rochester School of Medicine, and the Center for Fluorescence Spectroscopy at University of Maryland School of Medicine.
